Adventures as Miss Saigon

After probably the most stressful 2 weeks of my life, I’m back on track with my moving plans and preparations!

Just over 2 weeks ago, we found out that my mom has cancer, and today finally got the test results to tell us more details. Thankfully, it looks like the doctors have caught it early enough and will be able to operate. My mom is the only thing my sister and I have, seeing as my father hasn’t been in the picture for at least 10 years, and we’re so relieved to get the best news possible in this crappy situation.

For 20+ years, I’ve lived within blocks of my mom (if not with her). I see her almost every day, and talk to her on the phone so often that sometimes she seems annoyed I’m calling again. On the bright side, the past two weeks have allowed my mom, sister and I to spend a whole lot of quality family time together, trying to keep each other busy, and keep our minds occupied.

This whole cancer “episode” couldn’t have come at a worse time – 6 weeks before I’m supposed to leave the country.  Not only have I been stressed out and anxious about my mom’s diagnosis and waiting for test results, I’ve also been going back and forth between moving to the other side of the world, delaying my trip, and canceling it altogether. I now feel fairly comfortable with continuing my plans to move to Vietnam. If need be, I can always get on a plane and come home.

So now, I’m exactly a month away from starting my journey! The countdown that I’ve been doing has gone from exciting, to depressing (counting down the days I have left to spend time with my family) to exciting again…The preparations that I’ve been somewhat neglecting over the last few weeks need to be resumed in full force, starting tomorrow! For now, I’m hoping that I can finally start sleeping again…wish me luck!
